A main goal of the BPS library program is to encourage a love of reading so that students are excited about books as they are learning how to read. All BPS students come in for weekly 30-minute classes.

During class we:

  • Have a read aloud story
  • Reinforce literacy skills being taught in classroom
  • Learn proper book care
  • Learn the parts of a book
  • Learn about different genres
  • Learn about different areas of the library, how it is organized, and how to locate books
  • Introduce the automated catalog
  • Participate in special activities such as guest readers, author/illustrator visits, and book fairs
  • Learn about others areas including internet safety
  • Alexandria

Students also have the opportunity to self-select books to check out as a part of library class. BPS circulation approaches 1,300 books each week.

The school library staff has four major areas of responsibility: instruction/curriculum, programming, management, and staff support. A primary goal for BCSC library staff members is to ensure that all students and staff have access to the books and materials they need and want. They also work to help students develop skills that enable each child to be proficient and efficient users of information, both physical and digital. Library lessons support reading aims as well as broad instructional goals such as information literacy and independent learning.

A variety of programming is offered to support and enhance students’ interests and learning.
