Special Education

Not everyone learns in the same way or at the same pace. Some students need additional support to help them learn. Student programs for specific learning disabilities, mild cognitive disabilities, emotional disabilities, language speech impaired, deaf or hard of hearing and moderate cognitive disabilities are offered. Teachers or parents may refer students for assessment for these programs.

Batesville Community School Corporation ensures that all eligible students with disabilities are provided a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. Special education includes students with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Communication Disorder
  • Deaf-Blindness
  • Developmental Delay
  • Emotional Disability
  • Hearing Impairment
  • Learning Disability
  • Mental Disability
  • Multiple Disabilities
  • Orthopedic Impairment
  • Other Health Impairments
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Visual Impairment

BCSC offers a variety of programs so that special education students receive their education in the setting that most appropriately meets their diverse instructional and related services needs.

The Batesville Community School Corporation is part of the Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative, better known as the ROD Center.  ROD tests students referred for possible special education programs.  In addition to providing the testing services, BCSC also utilizes resource people for occupational and physical therapy from ROD.  The ROD Cooperative is located in Sunman and can be reached at 812-623-2212.

Referral to the special education program may be initiated by a teacher or principal/associate principal, or by a parent request.  After individual testing through the ROD Cooperative, placement in a special education program is determined by criteria set in State and Federal guidelines and only with parental permission.
