For the students who want to learn even more about the music of other cultures, BMS offers an after school xylophone ensemble. Using authentic African xylophones from Ghana, the gyil, students perform traditional and newly created songs. The group meets twice a week for rehearsal (Monday and Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.). The group has performed at Miami University, the Indiana State Museum, the Indiana State House, and at the Indiana Music Educators Convention.
For high school students who wish to expand their musical skills and knowledge, BHS offers the Batesville Steel Band. The sounds of these instruments are so closely connected to island vacations, that they make us smile when we hear them. This ensemble is open to any BHS student. The group is currently meeting once a week in the evening in the BHS choir room (Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.).
